If users want to be able to retrieve the external memories they have produced, they must spend time putting photos in books, or at least have them neatly sorted in envelopes and boxes. They have to keep exact records of what is stored on what tape, and update their records whenever they make any changes. This is not trivial. For example, many mass-market audiocassette players had notoriously imprecise counters built in. In a similar vein, as the capacity of videotapes increased from minutes to hours, so did the likelihood of forgetting what exactly was stored where.
