Well, I was on an aircraft carrier. We were preparing for an invasion of Japan. We were getting ready to land—the fleet was getting ready to land 500,000 men or so in Japan in an effort to take Japan and, in a sense, liberate it. Well, I was on a carrier, and we had about five or six carriers in the middle of the fleet in the Pacific. They would have been the first target of the kamikazes. Kamikazes were planes whose pilots were on a suicide mission. It was reported that there were 2,500 kamikazes—planes and pilots trained and ready to counteract any invasion.
Remember, this was in a time when college was almost unheard of for working people and people from farm families. I still had this problem with languages and writing even in college. As I said, when I went to YCI and had an English teacher by the name of Snyder; he required us to write a one-page essay every day, five days a week. He took the trouble of reading and making corrections and suggestions. By the end of that year, he had developed me to the point where at least I was a passably good writer.
