Dogs, cats, and animals at the zoo were used as food, and Bernhardt often gave her own rations to a hungry soldier. When the bombardment of Paris began on December 27, and the hospital flag on the Odéon became a target for Prussian gunners, she ordered the patients transferred to the cellars. When the cellars proved uninhabitable because of broken pipes and hungry rats, she sent the sickest patients to another hospital and rented an empty apartment, where she and Madame Guérard nursed the rest back to health.
