Lacking the great age, huge scale, and overpowering works of art typical of many Old World antiquities, the lesser, more recent aboriginal remains of the American Southwest have assumed a different allure because they have become an integral part of the lore of the Old West and its visions of cowboys, Indians, and lost Spanish treasure.
For me, the wrecked but handsome structures standing in silent formation before the tawny cliffs still reverberated with lingering forces of the human drama that had come to an end there over eight hundred years earlier. This was the romance of archaeology that was enjoyed by the intellectually immature such as myself, but was repelling to hard-nosed scientists who were determined to erase the stigma of subjectiveness from their discipline.
