The idea has become so commonplace that some actors in the industry now claim that they do not talk explicitly about the notion of IO anymore; it has been incorporated into the 舖way they work舗. This chapter identifies some generic properties of IO in the offshore oil and gas industry. This is followed by a description of some of the new ways of doing work in an IO context and how they may affect safety. Finally, the chapter explores some of the implications for major accident prevention in an IO context, showing both positive and negative effects.

Skills integration offers the personnel and experts involved in the various phases of oil and gas production a shared frame of reference. Competence integration brings together the various skills and knowledge held by stakeholders involved in the various processes (for example, drilling and well operations, and reservoir, well, process, condition and HSE understanding). This interdisciplinary decision-making support is a key property of IO. Weltzien (2011) and Albrechtsen and Weltzien (2012) show how such an interdisciplinary expert centre for offshore drilling can facilitate safer drilling operations.
