Generally the individual sporangium is of characteristic shape, size range, and color and in most species is rather consistently stalked or sessile. The sporangia of a cluster are seated on a typically horny, membranous sheath, the hypothallus, in some species very conspicuous and in others difficult to see or not visible. It is secreted by the plasmodium at the time of sporulation, or simply represents the plasmodial sheath. Lime, when present, may be in the form of amorphous granules or of highly characteristic crystals.

The sclerotium. Under the influence of desiccation, adversely high or low temperature, lack of food, low pH, high osmotic pressure, sublethal doses of heavy metals, and probably other unfavorable conditions, the phaneroplasmodium may become transformed into a hard, horny resting stage, the sclerotium. Within the sclerotium, the protoplasm becomes aggregated in small masses or macrocysts ("spherules" when formed in liquid culture), each surrounded by a membrane (Jump, 1954). This state may be induced in the laboratory by transfer to a non-nutrient salt solution or by addition of mannitol to the growth medium (Gorman and Wilkins, 1980).

The protoplasm flows in one direction for about sixty to ninety seconds, the flow stops, and then the protoplasm flows in the reverse direction. In the phaneroplasmodium, the protoplasm is very granular, the inner and outer layers of the veins distinct, the advancing, fleshy fans conspicuous, and the margin definite. A second type of plasmodium, the aphanoplasmodium, is known only from a few species of Stemonitis, Comatricha, Lamproderma, and one species of Amaurochaete (Farr, 1982), but most of the Stemonitaceae may be expected to conform to this type.
