Joseph Wenzel (1992) proposed an influential tripartite division of product, procedure, and process. “Procedure” refers to regulative conventions such as those characterizing courtroom argument or legislative debate, whereas “process” identifies the emergence, management, and resolution of disagreements in ordinary, informal interaction. The product/procedure/process distinction has become commonplace. A fourth perspective, identified most notably with the work of Dale Hample (1992), regards argumentation as a cognitive process that occurs within the individual prior to interaction.
