We certainly could not expect to continue to spread-eagle the field and it is a foregone conclusion that our advantage will dwindle in two or three years from now.

That was necessary because Dr. George N. P. Mead needed reliable transportation to complete his rounds in Massachusetts. Young Mead’s schooling included St. George’s School in Newport Rhode Island, the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut, and MIT (1911–1915). Mead started his engineering career in 1915 at the Sterling Engine Company in Buffalo, New York, where he worked on the development of a new internal combustion engine. In 1916, he joined the Crane Simplex Automobile Company, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as a test engineer.

This power increase was due to 1) the development of higher PN fuels, which permitted higher manifold pressures without detonation (a great advantage the Allies had over the Germans in WWII); 2) development of more efficient superchargers, which produced the desired pressure increase without an abnormal increase in temperature; 3) forged aluminum cylinder heads with much greater cooling-fin surfaces; 4) higher rpm with reduction gears; and 5) intercoolers keeping the fuel–air mixture below the detonation temperature.
