In heutiger Betrachtungsweise kann die sprachlich merkwiirdige Klassifikation von Spencer verstanden werden als eine Abfolge zunehmender Mediatisierung der Individuen durch Institutionen.
Von heute aus wissen wir, dass dies vom Ansatz her schon auf zweifache Weise fehlerhaft war. Einmal war es fehlerhaft, die Mehrzahl der bis damals vorgefundenen schriftlosen Gesellschaften als Urzustand menschlichen Zusammen1ebens zu deuten. Heute kennen wir als Restbestiinde noch altere Bevolkerungen als die der am wenigsten entwickelten Lander der Dritten Welt. Bevolkerungen wie die Ainu in Japan, die lfugao auf der Insel Luzon (philippinen), einige Stiimme der Drawiden in Siidindien, die Aborigines in Australien sowie die Hottentotten und die Buschmiinner in Siid- und Siidwestafrika werden als noch altere Formen menschlichen Zusammenlebens inzwischen nicht selten "Vierte Welt" genannt.
