I had to make all my life’s decisions on my own. I look , , back and think that I could have gone any way at all, but somebody would always come along who would be interested and give me enough attention to keep me from going crazy. For example, great-aunts always told me how pretty I was. It would do something for me psychologically and keep me on track. They would never lecture me, but always gave me some self-confidence. Different people such as teachers would love me and give me more self-confidence.
This was a tactic they used for years against the Spanish and it worked. It worked for a while against the American military as well because the people would scatter; they had a prearranged place to meet when the danger was past. If women couldn’t get away with their husbands, they took their children and hid in the bushes. Then the military gathered up whomever was left usually older people, younger children, and women. They planned to take them back to the military post, but by the time they left the battle area, there would only be one or two cripples left, or orphaned children, or those who had gotten hurt in combat.
I still cry when I talk about it. I don’t know where all my pain comes from, but their form of discrimination was worse than any I ever knew. That’s why I felt so bad about being baptized. [After hearing what some church people said about Indians], I would come home so hurt and ask my grandmother why they said those things. ” That always allowed me to have another perspective and feel sorry for them because they didn’t know about Comanches. They didn’t know the Comanche language, and they didn’t know my grandparents and what valuable people they were.
