Tables 9 and 10 (F593) and Tables 11 and 12 (F594] show the chemical composition and mechanical property requirements for these materials. In spite of good corrosion resistance, the nonferrous and stainless steel fasteners could not match the strengths of the existing alloy steel bolts. Therefore, the fastener manufacturer was challenged to provide high strength corrosion-resistant bolts and nuts. ) First the higher strength 400 series stainless steels were used. However, they lacked the corrosion resistance of the 300 series and presented fastener ductility problems in the higher strength levels.

The earliest of these was the socket head cap screw (SHCS) with a minimum tensile strength of 180,000 psi. Other socket screw designs have 160,000 psi tensile strength. The steel aircraft fastener category includes the MS20004 series of internal wrenching head bolts at 160,000 psi. At 180,000 psi are NAS624 and the military version, MS21250. These have 12-point wrenching heads, as do all fasteners above 160,000 psi. In the late 1950s a series of high strength aircraft bolts were developed by one manufacturer.

This is a measure of the depth to which a steel can be hardened in different quenching media during the hardening phase of heat treatment. All fasteners (with the exception of self-drilling and self-tapping screws) must be through-hardened. This provides for uniform properties in what is in many cases a small cross section. The strength of the cross section is not only important in tension. A large number of screws are used in shear, and the shear strength must be in a consistent ratio to the tensile strength.
