Venable, of Lee's staff, to have witnessed an unseemly incident between Lee and Longstreet on the morning of July 2nd, Freeman wrote "it seems almost certain that Longstreet did not arrive until after Venable had left" (III, 87, note 5). Later Freeman would revise his view of Longstreet, a matter much overlooked in the literature, on which see Note 3, below. 3. See, for example, William Garrett Piston's Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant: James Longstreet and his Place in Southern History (Athens: University of Georgia Press, 1987), Jeffry D.

Lee assumed the leadership of the army, Longstreet was given a command which totalled fifteen brigades. In his new capacity Longstreet performed well, redeeming his reputation during the Seven Days' Battles. When the Army of Northern Virginia was formed in the summer of 1862, shortly before the Second Bull Run Campaign, Longstreet was given command of the "Right Wing," comprising five divisions, which became the First Corps on November 6, 1862. He was ever after in Lee's confidence, as commander of the First Corps and as second-in-command of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Longstreet was a perceptive and original commander. His penchant for the tactical defensive followed by counterattacks, reflects an understanding of the power of modern firearms. The surprising efficiency of his staff workwhen compared with that of other Civil War commandersis also suggestive of a progressive thinker, as is his concern for logistics. Far from being a "sluggish" commander, we find Longstreet to be among the Civil War's most skilled generals, a small company indeed. "Petticoats, Promotions, and Military Assignments" by William Garrett Piston examines Longstreet's early career, and points out the importance of his father-in-law, Brigadier General John Garland, in securing for him important assignments.
