Shielding Gas – A gas used to produce a protective atmosphere. Weld Pass – A single progression of welding along a joint. The result of a weld pass is a weld bead or layer. Short Circuiting Transfer (gas metal arc welding) – Metal transfer in which molten metal from a consumable electrode is deposited during repeated short circuits. See also globular transfer and spray transfer. Welder – One who performs manual or semiautomatic welding. Welder Certification – Written verification that a welder has produced welds meeting a prescribed standard of welder performance.

Any revised procedures must be approved. If the variable being changed is not outside the existing limit, the change is made on the Welding Procedure Specification, a revision number is added, and no requalification is needed. Welding Procedures are prepared and qualified during the design of the product or weldment. The engineering department should be aware of the procedures to assure production is accurate and efficient. Manufacturing personnel also require copies of the procedures to make sure work is performed using the proper methods, materials and techniques.
