This ability emerges around 1 year of age across all cultures. Mastery of language depends on many cognitive and learning skills, some of which we share with other primates. The child observes and understands that others have an orientation to the world and can express sounds that make sense, so it wants to join in. We teach a child ‘that is your hand’, not ‘that is perhaps your hand’.
