C. This work offered a great deal of insight into the theory and practice of architecture in ancient Rome. However, Vitruvius had lived before the time of the Roman Empire, when many of the surviving ruins were built. Therefore, the structures that could be studied in Italy were quite different from those described by Vitruvius. Renaissance architects had to rely on imagination to fill in the gaps in their knowledge.
