When the warriors returned and pursued the raiders, Captain Baker built numerous campfires, leading the Indians to believe the white party was much larger than it was, and the Indians abandoned the chase. Captain Baker's attitudes toward Indians had been colored by his capture in 1804 during the Deerfield raid; on the forced march to Canada he'd seen many of his fellow captives killed when they lagged behind. Later, Captain Baker escaped and returned to Massachusetts. In 1712, during the Indian wars, Indians engaged in games here were attacked by a party of whites from Haverhill, Massachusetts, led by Capt. Thomas Baker. Many Indians were killed in the battle, much fur was destroyed, and the victor's name was given to the river where the battle occurred. Another account of the incident says most of the camp's men were away at the time of the attack; old men, women, and children were the primary casualties.
