I had stumbled into modelling, of all things. To a girl like me, it was glamorous – but with a small ‘g’. However, there are only so many parties you can throw; only so many places you can go. When most of your time is spent trying to pay the bills, it doesn’t matter where you are: the most exciting city in the world or a windswept corner of north Ayrshire. It was time to go home. And here I was, peering through the half-light of the dance hall, with Whitesnake blasting my eardrums, and Rab trying his best to look ‘cool’ and indifferent.

I took a deep breath. ’ I said again. ‘What’s wrong? ’ He still wouldn’t turn round, still wouldn’t look at me. He had a spatula in his hand and he was using it to flick over meat in a frying pan. ‘Your mother’s gone,’ he replied in a voice that was weighed down by his obvious sadness. ’ I said, rallying for an instant, believing that she must have left early for her beloved bingo hall. ‘She’s just gone,’ he said in the same voice: ‘And she won’t be coming back. ’ He turned to me now and the pain was etched in his face.

I remembered my defiant response. ‘No, he’s not. He’s lovely. I’ll show you all. ’ How could I go crawling back now and admit that they were right – and I was wrong? I could hear their words of comfort and see their told-you-so expressions. Granny had warned me often of lying on beds of my own making.
