Rhus glabm Smooth Sumac It is the fruit of the smooth sumac, not the flowers, that catches one's eye. This shrub is usually 5-10 feet tall, sometimes taller. The compound leaves are alternate, with 13-30 sharp-toothed leaflets on each side of the midrib. The small flowers grow in branched, pointed, upright clusters, 6-9 inches long, at the end of a stout stem. Each flower has 5 greenish-yellow petals. The flowers are followed by reddish-brown seeds, which are a favorite bird food. The seeds remain firmly attached for a long time without noticeable deterioration and are often used in large decorative arrangements.
2) The individual flowers are minute, having no petals or sepals, though some may have small scales. The tiny flowers are grouped closely on a fleshy spike (spadix), with male flowers on the upper part and female flowers on the lower part.
