Air fills the soil pores, but it can be displaced by water flowing through the soil. If water fills most of the pores, the soil is waterlogged. Walking across it will churn the soil into mud. The total amount of pore space determines the amount of water a given volume of soil can hold. This is known as the porosity of the soil. Surprisingly perhaps, although soil particles vary greatly in size, their size does not affect the porosity. The diagram illustrates this. It shows three compartments of equal volume, containing one, eight, and many spherical particles.
