The Scotia Ridge is the east-closing arcuate submarine topographic excessive linking the Andean Cordillera of South the USA to the Antarctic Peninsula (Fig. 1.1). The ridge emerges from the ocean to shape small yet rugged islands: South Georgia at the North Scotia Ridge (Figs. 1.2 and 2.1; Pl. 1.1). All of those are displaced components of the South American continent (South Georgia) or the Antarctic Peninsula (South Orkney and South Shetland Islands). The South Sandwich Islands that shut off the Scotia Ridge within the east represent one of many least mature intraoceanic island arc structures of the area. 8 of the 11 islands within the arc are almost immediately volcanically lively (Pl. 1.2).

3). Green schists are also common in the basement. They appear to represent metavolcanic layers of various primary compositions and suggest proximity to a Gondwanaland margin magmatic arc, unless they are cover rocks structurally intercalated with the basement in the midCretaceous compression discussed below. There are no reliable radiometric dates from the basement of Cordillera Darwin. , 1981b). The basement rocks are typical of"basement" in the Scotia Arc region generally that contains late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic fossils and was deformed and metamotphosed before the deposition or extrusion of the Upper Jurassic Tobifera Fonnation, the Lower Cretaceous Zapata Fonnation, or their equivalents.

Eocene. At approximately 50 Ma (Fig. 2d) the spreading configuration underwent a major change. The AntarcticBellingshausen spreading center was eliminated and a piece ofthe Aluk plate was incorporated into the Antarctic plate so that the latter was significantly enlarged in this region. Subduction of the Alule plate along the West Antarctic margin appears to have ceased as far east as the base ofthe Antarctic Peninsula. Eocene to Oligocene. The plate configuration was fairly stable through this time interval.
