He arrived in New York in May 1782, and conducted an active defense of New York for the next 16 months.

Congressional slights were one of the motivations behind Benedict Arnold’s treason at West Point in 1780. There were occasional military actions. The British established outposts at Stony Point and Verplank’s Point. The Americans retook these positions, and captured a garrison at Paulus Hook in New Jersey with surprise raids. The French fleet arrived in 1779, followed by a French army the next year. The Continental Congress twice drew up plans to invade Canada with French assistance (and Lafayette commanding), but these fell through.
