Upper-level positions used criteria which were more subjective, and recent research has shown that women considered gender discrimination, stereotyping, and formal and informal organizational policies as contributing to women’s inability to rise to upper-level positions (Liff and Ward, 2001; Wood and Lindorff, 2001). In Mexico there has also been growth of women in professional and managerial positions (20 per cent in 1993; see Muller and Rowell, 1997); however, the proportion of top-level positions was 7 per cent, around the same as Canada’s; this was an increase of 2 per cent from 1993 to 2001 (Zabludovsky, 2001).

In upper-level management, this results in homosocial reproduction (Kanter, 1977) – that is, if an executive believes that men and women exhibit different behaviours in management positions, their actual behaviour and performance may have little impact upon the executive’s evaluation of them.
