And fourth, it demonstrates the worth of discursive research to theoretical reviews. Lemert’s critique may lead to primary revisions of sociologists’ belief in their discipline.

It must be agreed that sociology will make its way only as an empirical science. However, this book has been written in part out of the conviction that sociologists are not now (any more than they ever have been) very clear on what constitutes the so-called empirical world. I believe that it is in recognition of this confusion that theoretical and metatheoretical studies find their justifications. Whatever else theory can be, there is a place for theory as the orderly sorting out of problems surrounding empirical work, even when this sort of theorizing does not directly result in numbers and propositions.

Of course, one would not find so many respectable and otherwise cautious intellectuals speaking about "paradigm shifts" without good reasons. The most apparent of these good reasons are: the many philosophical studies of sociological theory (for example, Habermas 1971a, Emmet and MacIntyre 1970, Filmer et al.
