A paradox arises in the Republic when Plato requires that philosophers must rule. Plata promises supreme benefits to the just man yet he also apparendy requires philosophers to at least partiaUy sacrifice their own welfare in order to enhance the welfare of the polis. It would appear that these two positions, both of which are of central importance to the Republi~ are inconsistent. The paradox can be dispeUed in a way that does fuU justice to the text once we understand the importance of the doctrine that moral requirements are necessary for happiness (APh 81).

Le mythe apparaît alors comme lé discours par lequel est communiqué tout ce qu'une collectivité donnée conserve en mémoire de son passé et tout ce qu'elle transmet oralement d'une génération à une autre, que ce discours ait ou non été élaboré par un technicien de la communication, comme le poète.
