Thus, the mom message of inclusiveness and nonduality has been changed to a momjit message of separation and opposition. The vital mom understanding which reflects the natural order of things is absent, leaving us with a distorted view of reality. In the Tun-huang version, however, all duality has been eliminated and momjit, or one’s thoughts, is correctly seen as an inherently operating function of true reality. This is the crucial message of mom: thoughts do not oppose reality but are rather a natural occurrence operating in tandem with it.

DEFINITION OF MOM AND MOMJIT: A CLOSER LOOK How can we describe mom? Words cannot accomplish this. Perhaps the closest we can come is to say that mom is what enables momjit to exist. The definition of momjit is more accessible; it is whatever can be 22 One Korean’s Approach to Buddhism expressed, described, or defined, and is by nature temporal, momentary, and impermanent.
