Let’s talk about one specific person and refer to other situations if you need to illustrate a point. I suggest we take the most recent parrainage, which I took on within the VCA. The person was called Marc, he was 57 years old and when I first met him he had been unemployed for 8 months. Within the VCA there is a rule which is that the parrain meets their filleul once every two weeks, at the parrain’s work premises. With Marc, I waived this rule intentionally because he was very destabilized by his current situation.

One of the people who generously gave of his time was a French company director who just recently agreed to answer questions concerning his experience of having a mentor as well being a mentor himself. He is at present managing director of a French company in the food industry, co-founder and director of a group of private consultants, and also co-founder and director of a voluntary association named VCA whose mission is to help unemployed executives find employment. These executives are paired with a mentor who, as far as possible, is either a professional in the same field of business or at least has some connections in that field.

Because of my personality, my life style, my profession, I need to take time to stand back and reflect. However, changing mentor over a period of five years was also in order to focus on a given area through the help of a specific person. For example, in the last two years I wanted to focus on more spiritual matters. So it was not the same person with whom it was a question of human relationship. How did it come about that you started with one, and then changed to another? I heard about the first person, I met him and then thought that this relationship could be good for me, there would be sufficient trust, and the relationship was relevant to my current situation.
