For example, many children may find it unpleasant, demeaning, and embarrassing and may be switched 'off rather than 'on' to physical activity for life. The focus on fitness which was common practice for many years, has been unsuccessful in increasing physical activity levels. The evidence for this is that we have a largely inactive adult population. Some countries which had national fitness surveys for years have high proportions of inactive children and adults. In contrast to physical fitness, which is an attribute, increased physical activity is a behaviour and can therefore be accomplished by all children regardless of ability (or disability) or personal interests.
In other words, physical activity does not have to be strenuous and hurt for it to do us good. Research has shown that moderate levels of physical activity (equivalent in intensity to brisk walking) are beneficial for health and can reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, and improve mental health. Also, because moderate intensity activity feels comfortable, it can be performed for longer. This is significant because it is the total amount of physical activity or energy expended (not the intensity) that is important for health and weight management.
