By Robert H. Mohlenbrock
This 8th quantity within the comprehensive Illustrated plants of Illinois sequence is the 7th quantity dedicated to flowering crops (the 8th quantity is dedicated to ferns) and the second one treating dicotyledons, which come with such famous crops as roses, peas, mustards, mints, nightshades, milkweeds, and asters. the former quantity on dicots, Flowering vegetation: Hollies to Loasas, was once published in 1978. In the current quantity, Mohlenbrock contains 3 orders of vascular vegetation encompassing 5 households. The orders are Salicales and Tamaricales, of the Salicaceae and Tamaricaceae households, and Capparidales, of the Capparidaceae, Resedaceae, and Brassicaceae households. In all, forty four genera and 117 species are treated during this quantity, every one species illustrated intimately.

They include the volume on ferns and seven on flowering plants. Of these seven, five have been devoted to monocotyledonous plants and one thus far to dicotyledonous plants.
The overall range for each species is given from the northeastern to the northwestern extremities, south to the southwestern limit, then eastward to the southeastern limit. The range has been compiled from various sources, including examination of herbarium material and some field studies. A general statement is given concerning the range of each species in Illinois. Dot maps showing county distribution for each taxon are provided. Each dot represents a voucher specimen deposited in some herbarium.
