For the study of comparative politics, I suggest three levels of analysis14 of governance, each with its own characteristic suffix • -archy denotes a governance regime, in which internal and external relations are integrated; one whose jurisdictional boundaries are coterminous with those of the modern nation-state (‘mon-’, ‘poly-’, ‘olig-’, ‘an-’) • -cracy15 denotes the ways in which a government handles the ‘external’ relations between the rulers and the ruled (‘demo-’, ‘auto-’, ‘aristo-’, ‘cosmo-’16) 14 We should here note the appropriation by economics of another suffix, which would otherwise have been of obvious promise for political purposes: ‘-poly’, as in ‘mono-’ and ‘oligo-’.
