During the filming of They All Laughed, Bogdanovich fell in love with 1980 Playboy Playmate and co-star Dorothy Stratten whose attempt to leave her husband, Paul Snider, ended in a murder-suicide (and was the basis for the movie Star 80). Bogdanovich bought the rights to They All Laughed after distributors passed on it due to the Stratten murder, but the limited release left Bogdanovich bankrupt.
