By Paul Grefen

Database aid for Workflow administration: The large Project offers the result of the ESPRIT extensive venture on complex database aid for workflow administration. The booklet discusses the cutting-edge in combining database administration and workflow administration know-how, in particular within the components of transaction and exception administration. This know-how is complemented by means of a high-level conceptual workflow version and linked workflow program layout method. In extensive, complicated base know-how is utilized, like a dispensed computing version according to the corba ordinary. The usability of the huge procedure is documented during this publication through a dialogue of 2 real-world functions from the assurance and well-being care domain names.
Database help for Workflow administration: The extensive Project serves as a good reference, and will be used for complex classes on database and workflow administration systems.

There is no general approach to the analysis and design phases, and the focus is on the specific characteristics of a given system. On the other hand, the Unified Modeling Language (UML) [UML97] is becoming a broadly adopted approach to software development including notations for process modeling, but again the effort is devoted more to providing a set of notations for modeling purposes rather than guiding the designer through the different design steps. Some efforts to extend and tailor UML to process and workflow modeling are appearing in recent literature, such as [UML98, UMB97, Wie98], proposing extensions to UML (and in particular to activity diagrams), in order to capture some of the peculiar aspects of office activities, such as activities being performed in parallel by several agents and a wide variety of exceptions.

For instance, variables can be classified as: to be filled in at case creation, to be used as a search key, and so on. Variables, are not shared by default among different cases (instances of workflow specifications). However, WIDE also supports the definitions of variables shared among multiple cases, possibly of different workflows. The (local) variable actually becomes a pointer to an information item, possibly stored in an external database and accessed by making calls to external applications.

Following the pull model, the system only puts the task into a shared task desk; then, it is up to each user with access to that shared task desk to pull the task into his own task desk: the user has to pick up the work to do. Thus, the difference between the two methods is the passive or active behavior of the user with respect to the system: in the push method, he simply waits for the work; in the pull method, he has to get the work items from the shared space. The pull method is especially interesting when there are groups of actors, all capable of performing the same kind of tasks.
