In this way, the dignity of man would be maintained and man's earthbound life invested with greater intrinsic value. 5 Such embracing of classical writers, however, such familiarity with them, actually began a century and a half earlier with Petrarch's discovery in 1333 of Cicero's Pro Archia poeta in Liège and, twelve years later, a manuscript of Cicero's Epistulae ad Atticum and Ad Quintum fratrem and the Ad Brutum (618) in Verona. Although these were only the first in a remarkable series of re-discovered Greek and Roman texts, discoveries that would continue through Salutati (13311406), who found Cicero's Epistolae ad familiares, and his protégé Poggio Bracciolini (13801459), who unearthed Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria and many other key works, Petrarch nevertheless remains today, as he did for the humanists, the epitome of the humanist scholar and student.
