The peak of the arch, located over the midpoint of the apron, should be 11⁄2" up from the bottom edge. Draw a smooth, even arc by driving a casing nail at the peak of the arc and at each of the starting points. Slip a flexible ruler or strip of thin plywood or hardboard behind the nails at the starting points and in front of the nail at the peak to create a smooth arc. Then, trace along the inside of the ruler to make a cutting line (photo 4). Cut along the line with a jigsaw and sand the cut smooth.
Cut a 54" piece of 5⁄4 deck board to make the top back rail. Make a template of one-half of the top back rail on a piece of cardboard according to the profile drawing on page 33. Cut the template out with scissors or an X-acto knife. Trace the template onto each half of the top back rail (photo 7). Then, cut along the layout line with a jigsaw. Sand smooth. Cut a 52" piece of 5⁄4 deck board to make the middle and bottom rails. Rip-cut this piece into one 2" wide board and one 3" wide board. Use a router and 1 ⁄4" roundover bit to ease the edges of the armrests, seat slats, and back rails (photo 8).
Attach the strips to the feet with 2" deck screws to form a platform for the box bottoms (photo 2). Drill three of four 1⁄2"-dia. deep holes in each platform. Cut the corner braces and bottom braces to length from 2 × 2 stock. Fasten bottom braces between corner braces to create a pair of brace assemblies with four corner posts. Use 21⁄2" deck screws driven into pilot holes to fasten the parts. Set each assembly on a platform so all edges are flush, and attach this assembly by driving 2" deck screws down through the bottom braces.
