In the late 1980s, with the beginning of rapid economic development, the so-called funü huijia (“women should return home”) dispute – which called on women to go home to solve the emerging problem of surplus labor – did take place (Ochiai 1988). But despite this earlier pressure to force women from the workforce, full-time housewives continue to be extremely rare.
