But despite this earlier pressure to force women from the workforce, full-time housewives continue to be extremely rare.

Elizabeth Bott, a pioneer in social network study, wrote that the immediate social environment of an urban family is best thought of not in terms of the geographical area in which they live, but rather in terms of the complete network of concrete social relationships held by the family (Bott 1957).
